Mobility is a key component of the independence that people risk losing as a
result of age-related and other disabilities. Transportation systems dominated
by private vehicles complicate efforts to offer alternatives to people not
capable of or comfortable with driving.
The complexity and importance of this issue are reflected in the volume of
research, legislation, products and services devoted to it. Initially, CALI
will prioritize other areas of Assisted Living (AL) research that have received
comparatively less attention.
CALI will engage in and support AL transportation research as funding and
resources allow. Researchers and potential sponsors are encouraged to contact
us with proposals.
A few core research issues:
- Location of AL facilities. Isolated locations tend to isolate their
residents.
- Transportation alternatives. The lack of alternatives can effectively
immobilize the elderly and disabled.
- Community planning. Cities and townships must provide for a future
increasingly populated by older people who require a wide range of highly
accessible services.
